Mike Kilgannon is an English teacher from Sheffield whose philosophy “if you enter competitions you’ll have a deadline,” paid off when he won second place in last year’s Flash Fiction category. His story of a grieving mother discovering more about her son was poignant, funny and unforgettable.

A competition definitely helps with motivation says Mike,”Just one a year, get something in, where’s the harm?”

He was in the Peak District with his children when the call came through to say he’d won £500. “I’d not won anything before so it knocked me out really. It also gave me the confidence to attend a local writers group. Until that phone call  there’s no way I’d have walked into that room, never in a million years.”
